How to survive a Holiday party

Holiday Parties are a great time to come together with family, friends, and co-workers.  Make no mistake,  these holiday parties are a great time and I encourage you to go and have a great time. However, these parties are loaded with food that are high in sugar, fat, salt, and especially alcohol.

If you are trying to maintain your health and/or your weight, there are certainly things you can do to minimize the extra calories, weight gain, and guilt that can be associated with indulging during the holiday party:

  1. Eat a healthy breakfast – Starting your day with a healthy breakfast and eating sensibly throughout the day should help you control your appetite and prevent you from going overboard at the holiday table.
  2. Exercise – Work it off before it goes in. The gym may be closed but that doesn‘t mean you can‘t sneak in a quick home workout or cardio session. Remember, a good workout will raise your metabolic rate for hours afterwards and can help negate the affects of a few extra calories. Need a quick workout idea? Go for a walk/run with friends.  Do some interval training – for example, Run for 2 minutes at a pace that is challenging, and then walk for 2 minutes to recover. Repeat that 4-6 times.
  3. Eat slowly– Make one plate of the foods you really want. It takes about twenty minutes for your brain to register that your stomach is full. Take your time to enjoy the taste of every bite. Put your utensil down between bites to make sure you can taste and savor the food.  Do this,  and you may realize you don‘t need to go back for seconds. When you are full, make sure you stop eating! Go socialize with your friends and co-workers.
  4. Don’t drink you calories Liquors, wines and mixed drinks can contain 150- 450 calories per glass whereas, water, iced tea and soda water are calorie- free. Save your calories for the good stuff! If you are going to have a glass of wine, beer, or other cocktails, please drink in moderation.
  5. Keep it in perspective– It takes days of overeating to gain weight; one day won’t make or break your program. Nothing is more destructive to a healthy eating plan than the negative feelings of failure and guilt. If you over-indulge don‘t beat yourself up; get over it and get back on the program the next day. Acknowledge what happened, and move on.  Get over it and get back on track.
